Chimney Lining Evaluation/Quote

We recently bought our home. It's a 1920's two and a half storey red brick. There is a chimney in each of the 2 reception rooms, with chimneys in the bedrooms directly above also. We're the last on the terrace with the chimney on the external wall.

The survey we had on the house suggested looking into having the chimneys reviewed regarding re-lining as they might be a fire hazard. It would be nice to light a fire over christmas in one or other fireplace, so I want to get someone in to look at the chimneys to see what might need to be done. Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who might be qualified to have a look for us and quote for the job? I had a good look in the chimney section before posting but didn't find anything. Thanks!

Hi David, i too just bought a house with the same problem and to get teh chimney re lined is really very expensive, so i opted to buy a solid fuel stove which only needs a flexiflu liner, and teh stove provides so much more heat than an open fire. i received 3 quotes ranging from 5,000 , 3,500 and 1,600, so do check out a few people. The man i went with is John, i think his company is Access Chimneys and his mobile is 087 9839288, a great guy and very clean workman, teh reason he charges less is because he knows that people will not pay 3,500 so he might as well make something.
All teh best with it.

Thanks for the reply Lisa. I'll give John a ring, but we're fairly limited to using the chimneys with fireplaces, period house with big original fireplaces, dont think i'll get away with the solid fuel stove option.

Could be wrong but a stainless steel flexi-flue lining should work in an open fire.

I had to get a chimney lined in my rental property, Templemore Chimney Specialists 087 2647582 were the cheapest and the nicest of the 3 companies that called out (my ins guy also recommended them). He would'nt hear of the stainless flue and lined the chimney the traditional way. Since then my parents had to get a job done on their chimney (it had to be rebuilt) and he came and had the job done in a day and no mess.

No connection except a happy customer.

Thanks, will give them a bell

Hi David, I had Michael from Mitchell Chimneys 0863451807 in and he did a clay reline, it took the day but they were quick cheap and clean. I think they do a good bit of work i Dublin.

Thanks for that. As chance would have it, I rang Tim in Templemore Chimneys and he gave me Michael's number, apparently Michael and he used to work together. He's going to come round to see what the story is. Looking forward to a warm hearth this winter, hopefully without too much expense!

Hi Lisa,

I got quotes last year for stainless liners in two chimneys here in England. Quote was £2000. I am interested in the stove route and would like to know if the one you got would fit into a standard fireplace opening.

Thanks

Got Michael to look at the chimneys. Quote yet to arrive but looks like costing about 2K per chimney to re-line, they are in tats at the moment. It will have to wait, we have higher priorities than lighting a few fires a year at that price! They have to put a hole in the chimney breast which is currently wall papered, so means redecoration too. Garden and re-wiring higher priority jobs.

In order for a stainless steel flue to be used for an open fire it must be twin walled. Make sure that everybody is quoting for this in their figures, including all builders work and making good.

Over here there are two grades of stainless flue, both twin walled, one of them is guaranteed for 10 years, the other for 25 years. Suggest you Google on "Stainless steel flue liner" for more details.

There are actually single wall stainless steel flues, so then that means there are 3 types of stainless steel flue "over here"
