Hi there,

I am just wondering where would be the cheapest place to buy books inireland or online. all recommendations appreciated.

I have looked at amazon but they dont have any of the books relating to the irish curriculum.

THANKS,
Sully.

Its very hard to find competitively priced books in this specialist area. I usually find the bigger problem being who can get them to you the fastest. Depending on the type of book it can take Easons 2-6 weeks to order but there is no big saving to be made.
Is there a university near you ? The one I am based in is very good about stocking required texts and ordering but beware they can be more expensive than the high street bookshops.

Is there a learning order in particular that you are looking for a book on or are you just looking for books on general learning disorders? There was a girl on Nationwide about 2 weeks ago who owns a shop in Kilkenny called "Khans Bargain Books". She has a section in her shop specifically for people with reading difficulties as she is dyslexic herself but she may carry books which outline other difficulties.

Hi All,

i am interested in books for Special education needs, Dyslexia would be important to me as well as Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia, ADD, and ADHD etc.

Thank you all for your suggestions,
Sully.

I thought my son had Dyspraxia a few years ago but he didn't, or if he did he grew out of it. I found excellent books in the library at the time on all the above-mentioned. There is an Irish Dyspraxia Association as there are Associtions for ADD & Dyslexia that may be able to guide you in the right direction for books in relation to the irish curriculum.

What about your local library.
Look at www.borrowbooks.ie and you can seach the catalogues of all Irish public libraries.
Most will take orders for specific titles if they are new they will be purchased or sourced in Ireland or abroad.

It might be worth approaching the libraries of your nearest College of Education — in some circumstances they will issue you with a reader's card allowing you to consult books, if not borrow them.

and [broken link removed] both offer graduate diplomas (diplomæ?) in Special Needs education, and I imagine that they must by now have fairly extensive library holdings in that area...

Another link where you might find some useful info can be found on Specialed website. Great link to the borrow books website Bamhan. I never knew such a service existed.

Indeed it does and is a fantastic service offered free to users of any public library in Ireland.

What about the speech and language therapy unit at your local health centre? They would have books. I am sure if you ask really nicely you could photocopy what they recommend. Educating parents is exactly what SLT's want in the long run.;)

Also Dr Steevens hospital beside Heuston. This is now a library! Is it open to the public?

Thanks eo everyone who responded, will definitely check some of those sites out, but if possible i would prefer to buy the books myself to have my own library on these issues for myself.

If you are a Secondary School Teacher Sully, the Reps shoudl be coming around from all the school book companies (Folens, Gill & MacMillan etc.). They give sample books to teachers to encourage them to buy them but they would also give you a 10% or 20% discount if you wished to purchase a few of their books directly from them.

log onto jkp.com - they are the specialist publishers in this area

I have bought books from them, with no problems
