Changing from separate to joint assessments

We have been married for a number of years but have always had separate treatment as there was no benefit in being jointly assessed. I am due to be out of work soon so this will have to change. I know I have to send in the proof of marriage etc but what happens after that. How do I figure out the best way to transfer credits to my husband? I presume a redundancy payment will use up anything I hadn't already used this year so is there any point in doing anything this year?

I will be looking for work but if there is nothing suitable for our family circumstances is there anything I need to do if I decide to stay at home full time from a tax point of view?

Ring the Revenue helpline. I have used this several times re queries and found that they are generally very helpful!
