Can sterling notes go out of date?

a relative told me of someone who recently gave sterling that had been in her house for a while to a family member going to England. When in England, she was apparently told that the notes were out of date! She was pressurised to open an account there to get them changed at the bank. Is this possible?

Yes, a series of £20 notes were retired a couple of years ago and you need to return them to a bank, I'll look for some further info

They have Edward Elgar on front of them

That explains that, many thanks. Please don't go to any further trouble.

I had a similar experience with retired sterling. However, I had no problem when I approached a bank, they did a straight swop for me, with no pressure to open an account.
