Buying a PC now or waiting for Vista?

I'm wondering if I should dive in and buy a PC now before christmas or wait for one with the new Vista software in February?

While it may seem obvious to wait the two downsides I see are that I expect prices would reflect the fact that the '07 machines have Vista, plus you could end up getting in at the start were there are plenty of bugs to be sorted out. A new machine in December '06 should be able to deal with a Vista install in a years time say.

Anyone any other views? Is vista going to be as big a change as Windows '95 was?

Unless there are specific VISTA features you really need, I would not bother as of now. You can upgrade later anyway. Also a lot of (most?) will continue to use XP for years to come. Generally I'd never buy features or power I dont need now, as it gets relatively cheaper in time.

Just buy now, its unlikely you'll even NEED to have Vista unless you are going to be using some specialised software programs e.g. programming tools etc. And even then its will be years before these tools wont work on XP. Although you will need the professional edition of XP.

And XP will be supported anyways for a good few years yet. If you are going to be using the laptop for Internet, music, games etc then you dont need Vista for a long time yet.

Certainly what is happening in the UK is that PC manufacturers are including a Microsoft 'voucher' whereby if you buy a PC now, you will be entitled to an upgrade to Vista upon its release. This [broken link removed]outlines their plans. Worth checking out...

Dell are doing a free upgrade to Vista on all new computers. There is IIRC a shipping fee to be paid to get the installation media at the time but that is all.

I'd never buy the MarkI version of anything! Let the early adopters suffer the 'teething troubles' and wait for Vista SP2 :)

The minimum system requirements for newer versions of Windows (including service packs and updates) are becoming ridiculous. Especially when there are free OSs and software that will do most of the things that most people need to do as a matter of course.

I have been using vista for about a month on a high spec laptop and have found it painfully slow to do anything that requires any processing. If you want my advise stick with XP until at least service pack 2 is out for vista

Most of the basic innovation we general users require is on the Browser level.
Hence using Firefox and availing of free updates and sticking with XP for the foreseable future is my intent.
