breakdown cover - specialists vs insurance

Hi. I've been a member of the AA for a good few years, but these days insurance companies are offering breakdown assistance with their policies. I was considering not renewing my AA membership as the allianz breakdown assitance seems to be pretty decent.

My gut feeling is that the AA would provide a better service as that's their bread and butter, but it's pricey enough and double insurance is not cool.

I was wondering if anyone has any opinions on the comparison of services from them?

How often have you had to use the AA over the years? Depending on where you break down, if you are with the AA you may be rescued by the same independents that the insurance companies use.

Warranties with new cars often provide Europe-wide breakdown cover as well.
 
Fortunately, I've only had to use them once after being a member for about 10 years. But I guess it's the piece of mind that having cover brings, not just the amount of callouts.

As it happens I'm going to be buying a new car shorty. I didn't realise there was also usually a breakdown cover with them. tks for the info.

My battery ran down last week, whilst down the country. Rang the insurance company, gave car reg and independent was there in 30 mins.
Didnt have to sign anything

Yes, this is typical. Not so much in the big cities where the AA have a lot of staff, but everywhere else, it'll be an indepedent.

We had had breakdown coverwith the new car dor 3 years. 3 flat battery callouts - same independent guy each time. Good service, every time as well.
 
Depends on the insurance company in my experience.

Had Axa cover and the service was awful, was left (lone female) waiting 90 mins on a dark country road when lights failed. When the guy finally arrived he tinkered around under the bonnet for a bit, couldn't fix it then I had to pay the toll on the M50 when he towed the car home. Next morning I took it to a local garage and it was only a fuse, cost €10 and took 3 mins to fix.

Had my policy with 123 last year and had to use the service twice. The guys were out within 10 mins and could not have been more helpful.

Have AA insurance this year and got AA cover....long story...hopefully won't need to use them to suss out the service!
 
thanks for the replies. I'll get the AA cover again this year as I'll be covering my wife as well and she often does long drives alone to visit family members. If it was just myself, I probably wouldn't bother it
