Bounced cheque from company

A while back I did some ad hoc consultancy work for a company. They paid by cheque every few months with no issue other than slow payment.
The last cheque that I lodged has just been returned to me. The company in question are a UK firm that had 1 Irish base which has no shut. They are no longer at the premises and the phoneline is disconnected.
I have contacted the branch and bank involved but they cannot give me any information.
What is my next recourse here? Am I to write off this (4 figure) amount?
Thanks for any help,
Adam

Only you can decide whether to write off the debt.
Most people who do everything possible the get paid ie research company, make persistant demands to pay, take legal action as final step.

you should contact the UK firm in question if they paid you a cheque they have acknowledged that the debt exists.unless the UK firm and their Irish branch are seperate legal entities you can sue the UK company for the debt.Any good Solicitor/Debt collection agency will be able to act for you in the UK.
