Hi all, Would anyone know where i could buy black food colouring for a cake i am trying to bake? Mixing Blue/yellow/red will only make dark purple.

Would using Squid Ink do the trick?
Have you tried contacting a specialist cake shop?

How toxic is black ink? - You'll probably get away with eating the small amount required to dye the cake.

We got pink icing for our wedding cake from Britain, so maybe you can also get black food colouring on the internet.

[broken link removed] is advertising black food colouring.

Also found a seller on eBay (the-colour-shop) who sell black colouring (as well as other colours).

Thanks all. I'm not too sure about using plain dye however as it is for children but i will check out the web site and see if i can buy some in time.

Kitchen Complements in Chatham St D.2 or The Cakebox in Dun Laoghaire. Supercook black food colouring will only ever give you a greyish black. You'll need to get a proper paste colour from one of the above for real jet black.

Black food colouring can be purchased over the internet. It is best to colour the icing with coco powder first and then you just need a little black colouring. It is also worth noting that the more black colouring you use the higher the risk of the colouring being transferred to the consumers teeth!

Is the whole cake black? It all depends on the type of icing too, I have often covered cakes with sugarpaste and painted on black or any dark colours needed as it takes an enormous amount of colouring to make white icing that dark. This usually only works for small areas, I wouldnt paint a whole cake black but have painted areas like roof of car (cake obviously) and the hair on Betty Boop type cake etc. For adults I would mix the very thick paste colouring that you can get in any of the places mentioned with some alcohol, vodka for light colours or any one for dark colours, the alcohol evaporates and the icing dries. It's not perfect but its better than eating all that colouring.
