Being made redundant but going to Australia

My son has just been told he is being made redundant in 4 weeks time. He had already planned to go to Australia for 12 months in January - working holiday kind of thing, ticket booked etc. (hadn't told his employer yet so redundancy not affected thank goodness). What is the position regarding claiming benefits? He's worked for the company for approx. 9 years. My query really is - what does he tell them in the social welfare office - is he up front about going to leave, or does he stay quiet?
Any advice appreciated.

As long as he is genuinely looking for work between now and January he can legitimately claim.

Dereko1969 - good point! never thought of it that way, he will be looking for work up until he goes. Thanks
