Elderly mother gave myself and husband a Bank Draft about a month ago. Unfortunately, today I tearing up old sheets and accidently tore up the draft as well. Naturally she is very annoyed and says it's up to me to sort it but I think she will have to go back to Bank. Is this correct ?

Yes she will have to go back to bank and cancel old one and get a new one. Try and recover the date and number off the old one and try and stick it together and it might speed up things. You could ring up the bank branch and see what is their policy on renewing or replacing and this way you will be prepared.

As the bank is issuing the bank draft themselves they can normally stamp it "accountable for mutilation". Which effectively means they sellotape it together and sign across it. How did this work out for you in the end?

bear in mind that if she asks for a replacement, she may be asked by the bank to sign an indemnity protecting the bank if the original torn up draft ever was presented for payment
