Hi All,

I am renovation an ex Dublin corporation, 2 bed, mid terraced house built in the late 50`s early 60’s

I am concerned that there could be asbestos used in materials in the house purely because of its age.

There are vinyl tiles in the kitchen that I want to take up & I have reason to believe they are quite old. Also I want to remove a solid 2” thick fibrous cement sheet attached to inner sides of the external walls under the plaster, which seem to be a form of insulation.

Are these materials likely to contain asbestos?

Thanks

Yes.
Vinyl tiles of that era are very likely to contain asbestos - as is the adhesive.
Asbestos was also used for insulation -most commonly the panel form was fire proofing it was very often used in Kitchens behind cookers etc., to form doors of fridges/cold rooms etc. between garages and houses etc.

Is there somewhere i can bring samples of the material so it can be tested so that i can be sure before i go disturbing large areas of it?

Ive done a search but i can only find companies that remove it

Thanks

If it needs to be tested it is specialist, taking samples off will release dust and is dangerous, the specialist will want to see the house to see if there is anything else in the house that might contain asbestos.

A company that does this testing is OHSS in Balbriggan. (www.ohss.ie). Only company accredited with the irish national accredition board i understand.

They charge under €2000 to carry out tests and make recommendations on action that might be needed. (cheap for the peace of mind imo)

ps I have no connection other than as a satisfied customer
