"Apologies" that take Years

You're involved in some kind of accident. There are going to be legal proceedings. You are in the wrong and of that there is no doubt.

The victim is in hospital for tests. You want to apologise to the aggrieved person and his family. Your solicitor dictates that you cannot apologise in any way. Are there logical reasons for this?
 
Most people regard an apology as an admission of guilt, which is why a solicitor would most likely try to dissuade you from it.
