Hiya blue,

My boss has an apartment over there, went today actually. She's a nice boss and has allowed us the pleasure of using it in the past. So, restaurant wise try Sugar n'Spice, across from Dubliner pub in the Square, you need a reservation but it is worth it. Also if you go to Los Cristianos at all and like Indian Food, then you have to go to a place called King of India, it is absolutely gorgeous, everyone that's been over has tried it and loved it, it really is the best I've ever eaten. Its on a side street on the right on the main strip. There's a good drag queen show called Roxy Risque (no, it's not me!) in an English pub across from Dubliner, tacky yes, but a great laugh all the same. We prefered to stay down this end mostly.

Some of the club area is pretty horrific, we saw a guy get a bottle smashed over his head, teenagers no more than 16 (if even) getting pretty, em, up close and personal lets say on the streets, and the usually vomiting, crying etc.

There is a good disco bar on the end of the strip/square, I can't remember the name of it but it was good, nice bunch, late opening and taxis outside. I'll try find out the name of it later for you.

Hi Blueshoes,
Myself and girlfriend stayed there about 2 years ago, same playas americas place you is goin to.
This was our first "package" holiday, have to say I didn't enjoy it.
Can't pass by a pub without people tryin' to drag you in, they offer you your first drink free....when you buy your next one they charge you daft money, booze can be pretty expensive.
Saying that, it was probably the same when ye were in Lanzarote.
The waterslide park is cool there, just get there early.
There's a market a couple of miles away, it's okay, mostly touristy stuff for sale but might be worth the look.
Some good places to eat in alright, can't remember names though!!
Went on a boat bbq party one day, food and drink all included in the price, word of caution, if you think you may suffer from getting sea sick don't do it. The two of us were stuck on a boat getting sick and da smell of bbq does not help, and your trapped for 3 to 4 hours.
Look, I don't want to scare you off your holiday, just giving you our experience there.

hi guys thanks for the info.

roxy it all sounds good, cant wait to go now do you think it will be hot in september? also did you get a chance to find out the name of the disco bar? me and bf are young but not into the whole getting wasted and makin a show of ourselves as such tanx a mill again.

hi al2000 tanks for the post, yeah it sounds just like lanzarote was people trying ta drag you into there pub or disco's for a free (manky green drinl of some sort) our rep told us to walk along the beech side untill we knew where we were going. Like do these people not get the hint? i hate sayin no but like for f*** sake i dont wanna be hasseled. do you know if theres buses to the markets? or could you walk? Think i'll stay away from the boat bbq sound terrible

How do Blue!
Dunno about buses but we got a cab to the market was cheap enough, ask your rep or agree a price with cabbie. We walked back alright, but couldn't tell ya how long walk was as we stopped in a few watering holes on the way back!!!
About the people trying to drag ya into da pubs, with our experience these people got 1 euro a head for everyone they got into da pub. Suppose that's why they don't get the hint!!!! Tryin' to make a living, but can be as ignorant as f***.
Anywho have fun

Hi Blue,

Was in Tenerife a few years ago and the weather was very cloudy. Everyone in the resort was giving out about it. We hired a car and drove up the mountains each day to get above the clouds. It was very sunny and very hot above the clouds. Got a lot of jealous looks when we would return with our tans to find people sitting by the pool in long sleeved t-shirts and jeans each evening :) The rep told us that it was often cloudy because of the mountains on the island.

So my advice is to get above the clouds ! Don't worry about missing out on the beaches - the black sand wasn't very attractive looking anyways :D

Yeah, the weather system in Tenerife has definitely changed over the last few years. I first started visiting there back in the early eighties. With winds being mainly from the south all the cloud tended to be on the north side of the island. Not any more. I just got back from a 2 week trip in late June. First week was mainly cloudy (although you can get burned even still). The second week was better. We had exactly the same experience on our last visit 3 years ago.

Las Americas has become a bit of a kip - IMHO. That area with all the pubs - Las Veronicas - used to be a fun place twenty years ago - now its like a bad dream. Blaring music coming from dozens of pubs, all competing to drown each other out. Fights, puking, drug abuse, prostitution - you name it, its all there.

Los Cristianos is a smaller resort, but it too is growing rapidly. Its a bit tacky too. Dog poo everywhere.

There is a new area half way between the two resorts - Centro Safari - with lots of nice restaurants and a few decent bars. Plenty of good shops (its got a Xara for the ladies). And a Casino/Theatre that looks like a cross between a Roman amphitheatre and the Great Pyramid.
This is a more upmarket area and we spent all our time around here.

Teneriife is basically for lazing around, eating and drinking. Cultural activities are limited. Its worth hiring a car and driving up Mount Teide though - amazing geology and views (bring a jacket, it gets cold at the top).

Overall Tenerife, like many Spanish destinations, has been ruined by mass tourism. I only go there because I have a timeshare I bought cheap years ago. Its a pity, but thats what happens when the lager louts take over.

Give me France any day.

I have to agree with Meccano. It doesn't have a great deal to offer. In saying that it depends on what you want from a holiday. I went on a really cheap week several years ago with friends. We had a great laugh but I certainly wouldn't go back to the place. Mount Teide is worth the trip. I'd recommend getting out of the resorts as much as possible. As for that Veronicas area..what a dump!
