Aer Lingus - is it mandatory to purchase specific seats?

Booked flights months ago for Malaga. Heading off Thursday and went into the > 30 hour check in facility to check in and cannot get past the "choose your seats" option? This seems crazy if if you can book them for €5 per seat per journey. Am I missing something?

Any help would be appreciated.

Well there is the whole elephant of who owns a big share of AL! ;)

But in this case, their policies and options on seating have always differed. Aer Lingus have been charging to pre-book seats long before RyanAir started down that road and when they introduced their early check-in option the only reason I could see for it was the revenue stream for pre-booked seats. As Callybags has said, just wait until the main check-in becomes available and as long as you don't desperately want an exit seat you won't pay for it.
