Accredited Qualifications in the area of Taxation?

Does anyone know the best route to gaining come accredited qualifications in the area of taxation?
I am currently studying finance in college but there is not much of a taxation element to it, unlike the accounting mode, and feel that some knowledge in the field of taxation would be of great use!

AITI (Associate of the Irish Taxation Institute) is the recognized qualification in Ireland. But it is not sufficient on its own. The top tax practioners qualify as lawyers or accountants first.
