Married Couple - Combined Tax Query

I went to Dowling Financial Services many years back to ask about mortgage options. While we didn't get one we found the advice invaluable. They also do pensions and if you google them you will see they have a very impressive 5 star reviews from c.250 people. Definitely one to consider imo.

Tax treatment of spouse additional income (Sole-Trader or additional PAYE?)

According to the Form12: An individual with a PAYE source of income and with net assessable non-PAYE income (including income subject to DIRT), of €5,000 or more is regarded as a ‘chargeable person’ for Self-Assessment and must file a Form 11 for that year So if her income less expenses (not...

    Previous Form 11 returns

While you don't say it I am assuming you have been a PAYE employee since you gave up the taxi work. If it were me I would apply for the Digital Cert, submit the returns for those years (it will pre-populate with your PAYE income) and as there is no extra income the liabilities will be zero. Then...

    Form 11 question

I would simply ignore them both. One cancels out the other and you say it was a personal expense so should be ignored.

Hi there. Will check out with Revenue most likely anyhow but they're a bit slow sometimes these days.. Joint, Single or Separate Assessment for separated couple.

If you separate you are entitled to an extra Tax Credit (SPCCC) and tax band goodness so I suggest you register as separated with Revenue asap. I don't see any benefit for you staying as jointly assessed. As the previous contributor mentioned spousal maintenance will be taxable if agreed as part...

    Flat rate expenses

If I recall correctly when you apply for your FRE you get it back at the higher rate of income tax you pay so effectively it is just a portion of same so you'll get a refund of €139 (20% marginal rate) or €278 (higher rate).
