Change of career to tax consultant

Hi,

First time poster. Thinking of changing career and one of the options I am considering is a tax consultant. Would appreciate any advice from anyone who has trained as a tax consultant and is working in this field. I am Cork based. I have only done my own research at this point. I am thinking of doing part one of the exams myself to see if the subject matter interests me. I will do this while still in my current role. I won't be telling my employer, so will fund it myself etc. For anyone who has done these exams would it be very hard to do this w/o working in the tax world. I have an honours business degree and would have achieved A grades in law module and B grades in accountancy and maths modules in my degree. If I did part one and decided I liked it and wanted to pursue it would I be a good candidate for a job? I work in the insurance industry at the moment. Have a senior/non management role which requires attention to detail, responsibility, working to deadlines etc.

Thanks in advance for any advice/direction.

A friend of mine did something similar. The problem he encountered was when he went off with his tax qualification looking for a job, he had zero experience as a tax consultant. The salary he offered was just above an apprentices salary. He didn't fancy the massive pay cut so carried on doing what he was doing.

You should look into it yourself if you want to take the leap. Talk to a tax consultant and find out what kind of salary you would earn if you started off as an apprentice?

Thanks for the reply Steven. Have you any idea of the salary your friend was offered and also what age your friend was, No worries if you don't want to divulge. I reckon myself that I would be taking at least a 50% pay cut. My job has changed a lot in the last few years and I'm fairly unhappy at work for the last couple of years. Good advice re meeting a tax consultant, I plan to meet 2 on the qt before I make a final decision.

I can't remember to be honest. It was a couple of years ago.

It's always going to be hard to change careers. You get used to a certain salary and lifestyle. You make the move and your experience counts for very little, so your new salary reflects that. But if it's something you really want to do, go for it.

The exams are really hard!
