Considering moving to the Athlumney area of Navan and as we not from the area we don't know alot about it. Does anyone have any info on Navan/Athlumney, facilities, we're considering sending the kids to Loreto primary in the town is this a good school? Any info/aspect on moving to Navan is greatly appreciated. Cheers in advance ;-)

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

Hi, friends lived there(Athlumney Castle), they loved it, like living in any new suburb of Dublin for less, They did move back to Dublin though when the commute to work(dublin city) ground them down, and they missed having family near for minding the kids etc, But according to all reports it was a nice, full of children nearly all Dubs.

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

I lived in Athlumney Abbey for 3 years and thought it was great. Lots of facilitites close by, pubs, restaurants, gym with pool, shopping centre, takeaways, video rental, creche and medical centre in Johnstown village so you don't really need to go into the town. Navan town itself has come on a lot in recent times.

Only reason we moved was the same as previous poster gave, the commute. Working in Dundrum and Sandyford so no real option except the M50. Traffic just got worse every year. Gone in mornings at 6am, lucky to be back at 7.30pm. Sold up in January and moved to Dublin, almost 3 hours extra to ourselves each day and a huge improvement in quality of life. So i would think carefully if planning to commute, do a few test runs especially on a tuesday which was always the worst day of the week.
If you were working northseide dublin it's probably not too bad, blanchardstown or Finglas side. It's going to be at least 5-6 years before M3 is built and i think 2015 for rail link to Navan. Commute was the only downside though and I was sad to leave.

Best areas of Navan, Athlumney near town, Boyne Road ,Dublin rd. Johnstown area very built up dont think it will be great in 10 years.
Loreto secondary school top class in Athlumney. Town is very busy and traffic management in general is poor.If cummuting to Northside its good as you have two options, through Ashbourne or Dunshaughlin. You can get on the M50 in Finglas in 40 minutes in morning through Ashbourne now that it is bypassed.

Naaaaaavan.
Were will you be working , very bad traffic and long commuting times to Navan,

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

Well we're moving out from Ashbourne which is also full of Dubs so no change there...Happy Days to a culchie who has spent too long in The Pale! Thankfully we won't have to commute into town as one of us works in Mulhuddart and the other in Swords. By all accounts the traffic into town seems mental. Basically we're moving for more facilities for us and the kids, along with a bigger gaff. We've Loreto Primary slap bang in the centre of the town ear-marked but I'm getting mixed reports about the town schools and as I'm a blow in I've no idea who to listen to so all feedback is welcome. Someone mentioned that Navan had a large community of travellers and that this had caused parents to pull their kids out of the town schools in preference for the smaller country ones, has anyone heard this mentioned?

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

I lived in Athlumney Abbey in Navan for about 3 years. My wife is from Kentstown and we moved there in mid 2002 when the new estates were just being developed. The area started off showing great promise with lovely houses being built and loads of services being developed locally.

Unfortunately though the developers neglected (partly the fault of the Co. Council) to develop ANY ameneties for kids which has had undesirable side effects.

In the past year and a half or so an extremely anti-social group of children aged between about 10 and 18 have begun to hold the area to ransom. They hang around in large gangs, being generally intimidating, drinking, littering, petty vandalism and generally getting up to no good.

Add to this the fact that the green areas in the estates and public roads are not regularily maintained, there is a huge litter problem and no community spirit to speak of, perhaps you might like to rethink your situation.

I cannot comment on the schools in the town apart from Scoil Naomh Eanna, the Irish primary school which I know to be excellent.

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

Incidentally, I also commuted to Dublin city centre from Navan daily and it was the most depressing 2 years of my life.

The back roads between Navan and Dublin have become dangerous rat runs for commuters understandably trying to avoid traffic.

Politics is playing a huge role in putting even more roadblocks in the way of the development of the N3/M3.

5 years ago it was well known that Navan was going to be a satellite commuter town to Dublin. In 5 years there could have easily been a bypass built around Dunshaughlin and Navan and a complete upgrade of the N3 carried out. 5 years on, all we have about a mile of QBC either side of the countrys biggest bottleneck.

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

Best Primary school in Navan is St Pauls followed by St Olivers but unfortunately these schools are both up Flower Hill which can be a bottleneck in the morning.

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

Hi I know this is a old thread but I thought I would comment anyway.. I moved from Dublin to Athlumney 2 years ago and I love it.. It has the best of everything.. Plus the new ashbourne road has made the driving so much easier.. I leave later in the mornings then most of my friends in Dublin to get to work.. I travel from Navan to just beside Dublin Airport in 40 mins every day!! Best thing I ever did!

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

No offense but you're not exactly travelling into town, I think the other people commenting were talking about the length of time to travel into city center. You would need to add-on another 40 mins!!

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

Navan is a kip. A dirty, ugly, congested town with bad roads in all directions, and no rail services. Avoid at all costs.

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

Navan has lots of good facilities, though lacks a public park and although the Council have purchased land (about 70 acres) for a park, there has been little or no development to date. Athlumney is generally a pleasant and safe area to live, close to many amenities. The biggest problem with Navan is traffic - road works, congestion and notorious parking problems - especially bad in peak times.

The school you are considering, Loreto Primary, is located across the road from the Fairgreen, bang in the town centre. There are disgraceful large development plans for the Fairgreen right now which will make driving there a nightmare - even worse than at present if that's possible.

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

Just wondering did Jesda move to Navan or is she/he still in Ashbourne.
The Loreto Primary school is the school that alot of the Travellering families go to but I havnt heard of any problem with them. There is a new primary school in Johnstown which would be very close to the Athlumney area. I know it is in temporary accomadation at the moment but the plan is to build a new school.

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

My nephew goes to Lismullen NS as my sister and her lot live in The Athlumney area and he seems happy there. She likes the area, neighbours seem okay but there are also some dodgy ones and alot of immigrants living there and renting that drink too much and drive at a terrible speed around where young children play. Local Supervalu a bit of a rip off though and the gym is good but not everyone can afford those fees so they have something to do. I have to admit raising my eyebrows when I saw the price of the family membership for 2 adults & 1 child they are paying. I personally hate gyms, they are a prime example of rip off Ireland. The town is good though, great choice of shops which is a good option for anyone to have. Have to say though the N3 would put me off living there, it's a disgrace, don't know how anyone could commute on that road everyday!. Also, on the anti- social behaviour yes there are groups of brats hanging around the estates there trying to intimidate people which is really sad for a relatively new area!!.

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

I am moving to Navan this friday, we are moving up to Beaufort,
up by FLowerhill... we did look at Athlumney but a few people told us to stay away from it because it is turning out to be little blanchardstown ?
so we decided to move a bit further out, we both work in finglas so the
journey will only be about 40 mins, takes us longer to get home to Castleknock in the evenings...

Re: Moving to Navan any advice/info?

Hi Fee

I hate to tell you but getting down to the main road from Flower Hill in the morning can be a rather leisurely activity!

My daughter lives that side of Navan and on Monday she left the house at 6.30am and arrived in the Four Courts area at 8.45am. Thats 2 hours and 15 minutes. Crazy. Lucky for her that was a once off as she wont have to be in the city until 11.o'clock.The biggrst delay is on the dual carriage.
