Year end statement

On my end of year mortgage statement REFUNDS ISSUED is added to the opening balance for 2019. The refunds issued refers to amounts that were paid to me by cheque by the lender having been overpayments into my loan account over time.
I can understand charges being added but I can’t get my head around refunds being added.
