Hi, recently married in March 2025.

Two of us are PAYE workers and would both be on €80k + annual salaries.

Would we benefit from being jointly assessed or is that more when there is a disparity in salaries or only one of the couple is working?

Thanks

Unless a couple are experiencing relationship difficulties, there is no advantage in being separately assessed. You mightn't gain now by being jointly assessed but if your own or your other half's earnings situation unexpectedly changes you might well find yourselves out of pocket if you are still separately assessed at that point.

Thank you, on the basis there is no advantage in being separately assessed, I presume there is no disadvantage in being jointly assessed?

I suppose with plans to start a family in the near future and the Mrs likely to be on maternity leave, her earnings will be impacted.

So, I guess we could look to do the necessary steps to have us jointly assessed.

I think if you plan on having children then it's an absolute necessity to be jointly assessed.

One benefit....one of you can submit the health expenses, remote working, other claims etc :) saves a job for someone!
