I am travelling to Hong Kong later this year. Both myself and my wife are in our 70's. We have European travel Insurance at the moment but not worldwide Insurance.

I am looking to get a one off trip Insurance to cover this.

Looking for advice on the following. Shopping around for insurance I am being asked to disclose any medical issues that we might have had in the past two years....

  • In the last two years, taken any prescribed medication or received medical treatment or advice at a hospital, clinic, GP surgery or via remote consultation.

Do I have to state that I am on Cholesterol lowering medication, that I got eye drops for an infection in my eye, that I had a fall and injured my wrist?

If I disclose these, will my premium increase and if I don't disclose these can they refuse to pay out on any claim......even if my claim is unrelated to any of the above. For example an emergency appendicitis?

I am a Laya customer. I am not being asked these questions, presumably they already know about my health issues. Should I just take the travel insurance out with them?

I wouldn't assume there is any data sharing between LAYA about the specifics of your history.
When I went to get a quote it even asked me who my medical insurance was with...

The small print of the policy states that pre-existing medical conditions are not included.
So if you do not disclose e.g. the medication or wrist and had an incident related to them, they could refuse to cover.
That implies if you had an unrelated incident then you would be covered.

If you want cover for those conditions I suggest going with VHI. I don't know if there's an increase in premium though. I think you need to phone if you have pre-existing conditions, they will cover them but you may get rejected online.

I have looked at a couple of annual policies for us. My husband had cardiac surgery a few months ago. We have no chronic conditions, his treatment is finished, yes he’s on statins but his cholesterol is fine. He’s also on BP med as a precaution apparently, according to the GP.
I am getting quotes of €600+ and also €150.
I am with laya and he has health insurance as well.
The difference seems to depend on whether you want medical cover while abroad. So I need to check his policy if it covers him while away, USA is a particular concern, but I think he already has cover for that, and they know about it as they paid for his surgery and there’s no issue with him travelling. Consultant said go for it!

My Laya health care policy seems to cover me while anywhere in the world, so I’m only looking for travel insurance for the usual stuff like delays and lost luggage. So pre existing conditions shouldn’t matter. They aren’t impacted by statins or BP.

I dont think the fall is important if it happened months before your trip. And the issue with your eyes is that something that you need to take in a permanent way?...Maybe THIS can be of some help: Justtravelcover.com gives an option for travel insurance for people with Cholesterol issues. ITs an UK company.

In Ireland, I found multitrip.com an ok company. Nowadays when you take insurance they do ask you for the Name of your insurance company but that does not mean that you are then covered for all. See for instance HERE how this insurer asks you to contact them to get the correct quote depending on what you want the cover for.

If you are with Laya and they do not ask you anything extra then I would shop around and disclose any health issues I have. I would then compare the quotes with the one given by Laya. I would not mess around with insurances, they will try to stop any payment if they can find a reason for it.

we have health insurance with Laya, I had a cancer diagnosis 2023, still receiving treatment in 2025 my dcotor cleared me to travel to USA.

I bought the laya worldwide annual travel insurnace policy, I discussed my travel insurance and treatment in advance with them and was advised I was full covered once consulant had cleared me for travel. this was the only afforable option for us at the time. I didn't need any medical assitance in USA.
