World Cup Qualification Scenario ?

If Swiss beat France on Saturday, we beat Cyprus, and then France win their last game and we beat Swiss, then all three of us will finish on 19 points.

Qualification in the event of tied points, is normally decided on the basis of the home/away results between the two teams tied. But if three are tied, this can't work, as in the scenario I have outlined above, we would be entitled to finish ahead of the Swiss, the Swiss would be entitled to finish ahead of the French, and the French be entitled to finish ahead of us. Complex isn't it.

Does anyone know what criteria decides qualification where three teams finished tied, and the home/away rule has to be chucked out the window because it can't work ?

The Irish Times today details the qualification criteria as set out by FIFA - there's a bit too much to put it all in here.

Hang on Nially, for those of us who didn't see the times today... what is the bottom line?

The easiest solution is to win both games. AFAIK we are then guaranteed at least a play-off spot...

There is one (realistic) chance of Ireland topping the group. Lets assume the following : France and Ireland beat Cyprus.
If Switzerland beat France 1 - 0 and Ireland beat Swiitzerland 2 - 0 (or by a bigger margin than the Swiss beat France) then Ireland will top the group.
If France beat Swiitzerland they win the group. If they draw and Ireland draw with Switzerland, France win the group and the swiss qualify by virtue of away goals scored against Isreal (Ireland would be fourth). If Switzerland beat France 1 - 0 and we beat Switzerland 1 - 0 then it will go to goal difference of the whole group. In this case we would need a good victory over Cyprus to be in with a chance but bear in mind the Swiss scored 6 against the Faroes so they would be hard to catch. Effectively we need to win both games to get a qualifying spot at least.

In that scenario, Isreal would have to draw or lose to the Faroe Islands and France would have to beat Switzerland for us to have a chance of second place.

Good Man Elcato that's the first time anyone has explained a potential positive scenario - that justifies a visit to the pub on Saturday and again next Wednesday buy the HiAce in between for the Autobahns!

Can we have some number crunching please!

If we beat Switzerland then we get at least a play-off.

If we win and France don't win against Cyprus then Ireland will top the group.

What other scenarios!

and if we do quality, where are we going to get a team to replace that useless shower of tossers who currently wear the green. ( Givens dosn't wear green)

It is worrying alright after that performance, unless Shay Given coul dplay centre forward and score a couple of goals for us as well as saving at the other end.

What I am really surprised at is that Ireland are 4/5 on Wednesday and Switzerland are 3/1.... might be some nice compensation if we finds ourselves out on Thursday morning.
