I've looking for information on the working time directive. I note on a UK website that:
"Night Time workers must not work longer than 10 hrs of continuous work, in any 24 hours period and only work an average 48 hours over the agreed reference period."

Can you tell me if this applies to Ireland under E.U law.

You need to look at three sections for night workers. AFAIK:

1. Section 16 http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1997/en/act/pub/0020/sec0016.html#zza20y1997s16

Defines Night Worker and states average of 8hrs in any 24 hr period, note average in case of general night workers is only 2 months.

2. Section 15
http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1997/en/act/pub/0020/sec0015.html#zza20y1997s15

Average of 48 hours in 7 days, though the above for night work would be the standard.

3. Section 11
http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1997/en/act/pub/0020/sec0011.html#zza20y1997s11

Daily rest periods of 11 consecutive hours in any 24.

So in theory, maximum working day is 13 hours. However it must also average out to 8 hours per day in a 2 month period.
