Working in HR - want to move companies

My sister is working in a HR Department in a large multinational.

She is looking to move job but feels that if she sent out her CV to agencies, with all their contacts in there, it will get back to where she works which would obviously be a bit awkward to say the least.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what she could do?

If she's serious about moving, and can convince the recruitment companies of such, then they should be amenable to sending the cv around with the names of your sister, and maybe even her most recent company removed - a company description rather than a name.

However, recruitment companies are from past extensive experience (both working in one, and using their services) not worth getting involved with. The effort involved in using them is not worth the payoff.

If your sister is "known" in her working circles which you seem to imply if people would be bothered about passing on stories about her desire to move, then she must surely know enough people in the industry to be able to speak to people directly about possible job moves.

It's much much better to try to deal with companies direct rather than dealing with recruitment companies.

Send out the CV withOUT the company name could be even more dangerous and more likely to result in the CV landing back on her own company. Recruitment agencies deal with this issue all the time and are well used to handling it. Reputable agencies shouldn't have a problem with this, though it is definitely worth emphasising the reason for the requirement for confidentiality.

I'd disagree with Ronan's blanket dismissal of agencies. IMHO, they are a necessary evil - some multi-national companies will only deal with agencies when recruiting.

Theoretically not possible RainyDay. Recruitment agencies have (the good ones anyway) to ask you before they send your cv into any particular company. So, the person should be asked before it would be sent back to their own company.

Obviously entitled to your opinion. I have a colleague who has moved from working in a recruitment agency (and was therefore their best advocate) to working as a recruiter in a large Irish company.

In less than 3 months he has discovered the reality of dealing with recruitment agencies, and is doing his best to avoid them now.

And that's someone dealing with them from a client point of view (you'd think they'd act properly when dealing with people they'd potentially be earning money from) - not to mention how badly they treat candidates.

IMHO, it says a lot for companies that will only deal with recruitment companies in this day and age. Given their poor shoddy service (yes, i have proof and experience), it is a laziness and lack of real caring on the part of such companies to reduce themselves to shovelling through the crap that recruitment agencies have a tendency to throw at them.

The situation your sister is in is not unusual. She should approach a reputable HR recruitment company and explain that she would rather that her cv does not land back on the desk of her current company. This is not an unusual request, and any reputable recruitment company would respect that.

a good HR person should not have to recourse to use a recruitment agency to get a job for oneself. Make copies of your cv at the existing company and then post then to the HR departments of those companies you are interested in. A recruitment agency gets a FEE for introducing people so by going direct u will show iniative, keen to get on etc and save the company money. Getting a job in HR is all about networking so get involved with the CIPD, go to meetings, use the web, newspapers, check notices in job centres, and even windows of RC agencies.
