If she works more than an average of 48 hours over the year then her employer is breaking the law.
Having said that I work more than 48 hours a week and so do loads of people I know. In the real world of competitive business your hours are set by other things than legislation. Thankfully there are enough jobs in this country that no-one has to work long hours if they don't want to.
The bottom line may be that if your friend wants to follow a particular career path she may have to work very long hours. As long as she is not being singled out by her employer and it is the norm within the business then while she may win a case for breaching the working time directive she will not do her career much good.
