Hi,

I'm a newbie to this website, it's great, a wealth of information!

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on working from home? I have been working in administration, and in an accounts administrator role for about 6 years now and am looking for a change.

I would love to work from home for a while, maybe as a virtual assistant, a proofreader or a data entry clerk but I don't want to get caught up in the many scams out there.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get started?

Hi Lilsweets, welcome to AAM.

How about asking your current employer if they would consider allowing you to telework ?
You'll generally get a better response from an employer you've been with for a while, and who've built up trust in you.

All you need is a decent broadband connection and a laptop. Outline the benefits to them, you could desk-share so they only have to pay for office space for one person but have 2 'resources' sharing it. No commute time, no distractions (don't mention the possibility of you having any children around the place while you're there) and sure don't you do all your work on the computer anyway, and don't 'need' to be in the office 5 days a week.
 
Unfortunately taking my current job home with me is not an option, it's a relatively small company and bodies are needed in the office. Also I seem to be submerged in paper all the time and although a lot of it is scanned, it would be near impossible to operate at home for any long periods of time.
 
I placed a free ad in a few local papers - and received a fair response. However a lot of these people were timewasters - etc. I managed to get some work in but to be honest it wasn't worth it in the end - even though they were given the price before the job was started - they were still moaning about paying for it when the work was done.....

From my experience you get a lot of that starting out. Eventually you'll learn to filter the timewasters, it comes with experience. Have a contract, and get paid in stages rather than at the end. Things like that. People who are serious, have the money set aside and know what they want.

I would be interested in this too, but I don't know where to start. I am from a Pharmaceutical/manufacturing/science background but well experienced in Word/Excel/Visio etc and report writing....could I do something like that? What is the going rate generally?
