Hi, I'm looking to get good quality wooden gates for the front entrance of my house. Can't afford to get electric ones at present but will add that in the future. What sort of price would I have to pay for good quality double wooden gates? Can you recommend somewhere?

Thanks,

If you fancy the ranch style gates I bought mine from a Topline Hardware shop ( www.topline.ie for one near you) and they were much cheaper than leinster timber products. Now I'm not saying the quality was the same though ( not saying it's not either, just don't know) but the gates I bought are grand and do the job.

Hi... Regarding the comment about Top Line Hardware Gates Vs Leinster Timber Gates, No, They are def. not the same..... Top Line Gates Are Native Timber And Leinster Timber Gates Are Swedish Red Wood with a 20 year guarentee....

It's fine to say a gate is a gate and one will do the same job as the other but at the end of the day, it's like buying a car and the difference in buying a Ford Focus Or A Nissan Micra for example.....

There is most def a very true saying " Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten"... The only real way to see the difference in the two is touch and feel the product and see the difference in the timber, structure and quality.

For external gates the best option is to use hardwood - something like Iroko. This type of wood is naturally full of oils and is suitable for outdoor use.

The softwoods that are pressure treated are good, but again it's not "apples for apples" with the hardwood.

Depending on the size of them, put them in now with a view to automating in the future i.e. get the position of them correct on the piers to allow fitting of rams, or fit them on the boxes now. It will work out cheaper in the long run.

Teak is not the best option now a days... It was years ago, when soft wood was not pressure treated to the same spec that it is today. Teak is not 'maintenance free', it needs to be stained every year, despite what anyone will tell you. There are no timbers 'maintenace free'.

Hardwood certainly is a good timber but by no means cheper in the long run!!

Hardwood is very expensive and as I mentioned above, needs to be maintanined every year the same as soft wood.

It all depends on which soft wood you purchase and how it has been treated..

There are softwoods and oil tretments that work out far cheaper here and now and in the long run!
