Can anyone help me here- looking for very dark solid wood flooring - have heard that there is a very good crowd up in Monaghan that have a good range of wood and prices at very competitive rates compared to rip-off Dublin
... anyone heard of them and could give me name and address?
..... or anyone got any other good recommendations

I think they are Irwins in CastleBlanney, used them recently, excellent value, excellent list of couriers and fitters , highly recommended

Check out and of the ACE Hardware building suppliers. Found the VERY reasonable when we were getting some wood flooring recently.
 
If your going dark then you will probably be going for a hardwood which is an excellent decision as it will last and look a lot better over time softwoods scratch and dent too easily and can look terrible is a very short space of time depending on what the room is being used for.
Builders providers such as Brooks offer some good deals at present on solid timber flooring.

Others are:

Chadwicks
McMahons

Goggle them for websites.

we got some lovely merbau semi solid about 6 month ago from Chetham timber on the east wall..

Are ACE based in Blessington? - just did a search of Golden Pages for ACE Hardware - no joy but ACE Flooring in Blessington - is this them?
 
Having just spent Saturday in Louth and Monaghan with various providers of materials, thought I'd just share three names of flooring providers that were:
1) very helpful and friendly, 2) had good stock and availability, 3) had very good prices

Keen-M Imports in Dundalk - just off the Dublin Road before you get to Dundalk port - good range, probably slightly more expensive of the three

Irwins of Castleblayney - does both tiles and flooring - extensive range - pleasant staff - good prices (but i have seen here and heard elsewhere that their after-service is not good)

Kelly's Hardwood, Cremartin, Castleblayney - down a very backroad from Annyalla outside 'blayney - one man band - no frills here but the prices were the best by a margin and having checked with some of the bigger Dublin names, he beat them by a comfortable 35-45% margin. very pleasant guy - would highly recommend him

- sole trader, very well established & actually cares about the job (believe it or not, he is an old school tradesman who gives a **** ). He put in hard wood floors for us a few months ago, excellent job and a fair price. He took a lot of time to explain the various wood types, the impact of various types of wood, lifespan, how to protect them etc etc

slightly off topic but i had been hoping to go with dark wood flooring - like walnut - but was put off by the maintenance aspect! no matter what type of wood, it is usually varnish finished and when the varnish is scratched on dark wood, it leaves a white scratch - althought the wood itself has not been damaged; less noticeable on a lighter wood. i wanted something that could take a few knocks without wrecking it and went for 7.5" wide solid natural french oak in a kind of a rustic grade - plenty of knots and interest in it! have to say, i love it - and it gets plenty of wear and tear but still looks good. we went for lastalon (sp?) underlay on a concrete base - pricey but worth it!

I have been looking for hard wood flooring and I like the Merbau. Out of curiousity how much per sqm was the Merbau, and how much did you pay for fitting. Did you get a Damp Proof Membrane?

We are sourcing our floors from a Donegal company called Urlar. They aren't the cheapest but they have a fantastic range and some nice/different touches. Check out their site on [broken link removed]
