Hi

Boards are I suppose about 25 years old and generally are in reasonable condition, however on the south facing side, they are cracking/splitting a bit and the paint is peeling.

I was going to just paint 2 layers of stain then paint with yacht varnish in an attempt to prolong their life - is this a good idea? Was hoping to get a few more years out of them as they are not rotting or anything like that - I think the cracking is just due to weathering/neglect.

Any advice?

I wouldn't use varnish. When this weathers it flakes and needs alot of sand and care to keep right. I prefer bondex or similar one of the many similar products. Originally my parents house had varnished teak windows. They were a pain to keep right. Eventually we stripped them down (a painful job) and have used bondex ever since with excellent results. When they need redoing it is now simply a case of a very light sanding and then paint on the bondex.

Thanks - is this a job for stain + Bondex or just Bondex?
