wood peserver on new roof timbers?

Our kitchen extn is well under way and builders yesterday put up the skeleton of the roof timbers- i.e. rafters, facia etc. They've gone for the weekend.

It's been suggested, by a friend, that I should use this time to apply wood preserver to the timbers myself, which they don't necessarily do and would be a good long term precaution.

Any thoughts on whether this is necessary or if I'd be wasting my weekend?
