A public meeting in Claregalway next week will hear of plans to roll out a wireless broadband service in the area.
Plans are underway to provide a wireless broadband service in Claregalway in partnership with Irish Broadband under the County and Group Broadband Scheme. The service, which is expected to be launched in August, will also be available to residents in Corrandulla, Lackagh, Turloughmore, and Corundum.Seeing as I am living between two of these locations, what questions should I be asking at the meeting tonight (aside from the obvious cost questions)?
 
Get an idea of:

Upload Speed
Download Speed
Download Limits per month
Contention Ratio (how many people they allow over one line I think!! which can reduce speeds)
Contract duration / lock in period
Billing Frequency & Method

Might be useful in asking each of the above how they compare with Eircom which most peope will be able to compare with easily
 
Thank you for the information so far. This scheme seems to be a wireless one being offered essentially in country areas with a few centres of population, (small villages really). Has anyone any experience of such a scheme, how good it is and how far outside such village centres it can reach to?
 
Seeing as [broken link removed] already works in most of Claregalway and even as far out of Galway as Lackagh (not Turloughmore though) , and many of ye also have DSL I fail to see why you would bother with a group scheme as well bar a bit of wifi here and there where the lines are dodgy and they live in a hole . Irish Broadband are a sad joke of a company as you can see from all the stories specifically here.

You could always ask Digiweb to that meeting and see if they could do a better deal than IBB I suppose
 
Sounds like this is another waste of time. I am only considering attendong the meeting I am not organising it so I won't be inviting anyone else along. We are stuck in 56k land and sound now as if we will be forever. Very disappointed, why are we always being offered cowboy facilities in this country?
 
Why do you think it's a waste of time?

A colleague of mine worked voluntarily to set up one of these community wireless broadband schemes out in the west somewhere and from a technical point of view it sounded really good. I'm not sure how much subscribers paid for the service but I think it was reasonable enough. Obviously, as with any co-operative venture, success will depend on the committment of those involved.
 
Well, reading seven of the 15 pages of the thread from 2 pack only one person had anything good to say about IBB, generally people were unhappy with auctual speeds which they claim are slower than 56k modem, posters were organising to complain to advertising standards about false advertising by IBB regarding the speeds, there are also complaints about billing and technical help - well nobody seemed to get through. Very depressing reading really, I could find nothing good there atal. I was hoping to see some positive hand experience from people who have used this wireless system, only found one so far and that one was fairly vague.
 
Mind you a Group Scheme was approved during the winter for areas to the south of you, thats Carnmore / Oranmore see

and with Irish Broadband involved. It was locally organised by the Galway Chamber of Commerce. You could ask them about it .

As that was approved a few months back and is not live that I know of I fail to see how an as yet unapproved Claregalway scheme could be live in August becuase the next round of Group Scheme funding has not been announced by the Dept of Comms.

Have Digiweb said anything to you about Metro in your area ??? That works OK from what I see.
 
To be honest the first I heard of The Digiweb Metro was here today, I am not aware of anybody in my area using it and as we would be on the Claregalway side of Lackagh from what you say we should be covered. So we may have more than one option.
 
Lackagh village itself is quite high up whereas your side slopes away towards Galway. If you can actually see the top half of that giant eircom mast in Mervue from your house then you have a chance of metro .

I remember seeing an ignorant sized ESB mast around your own location where the footballers train which would be an ideal spot for a wireless service in your area and must be within half a mile of you from what you say.
