Will a PS3 play other region DVD's?

Thinking of buying a Sony PS3, only really to use as Blu Ray DVD player now that Xtravision seem to have a reasonable selection. However, I have a library of different region normal DVD's, regions 1 and 2 mostly, and seem to remember that a PS3 is region free for games but not DVD playback.

Is this the case and if so is there a workaround or do I still need to hang on to my old DVD player?
 
All GAMES at the moment are region free - I have often purchased games online from the states.

Most , but not all Blu ray films are so be sure to check before hand
