I have the option of staying in one of the followng towns on Cote d'Azure for 4 nights in September; Menton, Cagnes sur mer, Villefranche sure mer, Beauleau sure mer or Antibes. Just wondering if people have experiences of these and which they would recommend in terms of facilities in the town (restaurants, bars etc), beaches etc (sandy preferably). We're a couple on our own looking for relaxing holiday in a smallish town environment, close to beach but also to other activities such as walking, cycling etc.
I have been in Menton and Roquebrune Cap Martin. Both very nice. RCM small and has old town up higher which is gorgeous but very hilly, steps everwhere and you have to travel into Monaco ( granted only a few minutes away) or Menton for shops/restaurants. Also beaches are pebbly. Menton is very nice, restaurants all along the sea front, sandy beaches ( small), market town and lots of shops with a nice quiet atmosphere. From here Monte Carlo about 10 minutes away and you can go in opposite direction to the Italien border. Loads to see in the area but for me I would want a hire car to really see everything.
On balance, I'd probably go for Villa France, as its got more to offer, but they are all very pleasant. VF is also beside Nice, which is only a couple of k away, and there is lots to see and do there as well.
However, stay in any of them as you can travel train/bus along the coast and up to Monaco very easily, and would recommend travelling short trips including Cannes.
