Which financial institutions are covered by government guarantees?

Can someone clarify exactly what institutions are covered by the bank guarantee scheme?

Are building societies covered? I have some savings in a BS and wondering if I should move it to a bank. I didn't hear the ACC mentioned in any recent talks on guartantee schemes. Can someoune explain?
