when to hoover new carpet?

Hi, it may seem like a silly question, well I feel silly asking, but my OH has said you have to leave the carpet for a few weeks before hoovering or you will ruin it? I am like, get out of here, but he is adamant, happened to an aunt of his, so its murphys law in his book, this is a load of codswollop, isn't it, I can hoover this weekend if I want, only went in this week?
 
It shouldn't affect the carpet, but it may clog up your hoover as there tends to be alot of shedding from new carpets, so empty the bag regularly or use a damp cloth to take off as much of the fluff as possible.
