When job seeking - do you post your CV on-line?

I left my job end July and am job seeking at the moment. I have registered with the on-line recruitment sites for job alerts to be sent to me. I have been invited to post my CV in order that potential employers can find me. I am not sure whether to do this - privacy being the main reason.
Would you recommend putting your CV up? If I was to ... I would probably take as much personal information out as possible and just leave contact email address.
 
I did and thats how the HR team from my cuurent job (of 3 yrs) found my cv. They searched using 'key' words which matched my cv/experience. Can work quite well.

I'd certainly be reluctant to post my CV on line. There are plenty of routes/agencies that don't require or necessarily encourage this.
 
I registered with Monster and had it there. That's how HR found me for my current job. They found me. That was a nice ego boost
 
The only thing with putting it online is that the recruitment agencies will hound you from the minute it goes up.
It can be good in that they may have opportunities but in my experience a lot of them don't listen to what you want and are only concerned with the commission they get from placing you.
I'm not sure too many companies use a service like this directly to source staff. It's just a resource for the agencies

I disagree. The more savvy and larger companies will have an account with the likes of Monster etc and actively search there to fill roles.

Possibly Pique, I'm just going from experience though when I had a CV up on monster I wasn't contacted by 1 employer directly (maybe a poor reflection on my CV ) but the Agencies were falling over themselves with contacting me.
 
I don't like doing it, as it means my CV can be accessed by anyone. I know they can't really do much "damage", but I like to be in control somewhat of who sees my CV.

Anyway, it's simple to just check for new jobs everyday. For example, http://www.dole.ie has all the jobs from the different sites so I can search them all at once.

Also, with the recent Jobs.ie security breach (I think this only affected their CV database?), I'd rather be safe than sorry.
 
A friend of mine who is out of work since early July (25 years PA experience) cannot get a job. She is also finding that the agencies are panicing at the moment as they have no jobs to "sell" and do not even bother returning calls. She is finding it most disheartening.

I dont know how anyone else finds the agencies at present?

I have a friend in recruitment. Agencies are finding it tough as there are less companies hiring, companies who do have vacancies don't need recruitment agaencies as they can hire themselves and due to unemployment, there is a much bigger market. Also, due to cutbacks why pay someone for something you can do yourself.. Perhaps your friend should revert to other methods of job seeking that we had pre 1995..

I’ve done it
And got over 10 calls from agencies between 09:00 and 09:30 the next day.

I suppose this can be good but it can be bad also. Many of the agencies didn't care if the next job was better, just that they get their commission

As long as you remember that, they can be useful but best to apply direct if possible

Same for me. I think I may have kept email address & tel. number. I just got 1 call and that was the job I took, so certainly wans't hounded at all!
 


Is trying everything at present including the good old sending off CV's on spec to local firms, going through registers of business parks, golden pages,etc.

She has registered as a temp with all of the agencies too, no temp work out there either. Is considering going to work at Marks and Spencer or such like because in fairness, she is not somone who wants to sit around doing nothing and is cracking up after six weeks.
