when is tax payable

Is tax due to be paid in the year it is earned or the year it is paid?
I want to optimize my 20% band and defer non PAYE income into next year

Paid for PAYE. If non-PAYE income it may be on earned (or accounts basis) so it really depends on the source of the income.
