What virus protection to get?

I bought a new Dell laptop last month and it came with one month's free trail of McAfee virus protection. This trial will expire in 7 days.
Will my laptop then be totally unprotected? What virus protection is recommended and how much does this cost? Is it a once off cost or do you pay an annual subscription?
