From the Class 2 vs. Class 3 discussion, it seems that the way to qualify for the much cheaper Class 2 is to work in Ireland as soon as you return.
It seems that if you return to Ireland and don't work, you end up as Class 3 which is much more expensive.
So make sure you work when you come back. It probably doesn't have to be more than a few hours per week.
