What is Bitcoin mining and how is it done ?

Wasn't sure where to post this. The links below describe how the imbedding of software into a Chrome extension, into games and even hijacking corporate Cloud environments all in the name of getting others to unwittingly mine Bitcoins for othes. Who knows how much more energy/pollution this has caused:

If you hear your PC fans going on turbo, you know you visited a dodgy webpage !
Correct. And as we all know, Bitcoin has a monopoly on cryptocurrencies. No one else is allowed to create a new one in case it increases the supply.

Anyone can create their own cryptocurrency, bitcoin is open source and you can just copy its code.
'Bitcoin' however is limited to 21m. To change that it needs consensus within the bitcoin system.
No-one is stopping one from making their own system, and one has all the existing open source code to help start-up.
