Does public liability insurance cover workmen who come to do a job at your house, for instance painters, plumbers or maybe somebody chopping down a tree?

You should check your policy document carefully for public liability clauses. However any tradesperson coming in your door should have their own insurance and you may even invalidate your own claims if you fail to check.
If you are getting someone to to a job ask for their insurance and/or get them to sign a disclaimer.

generally your household insurance will cover you for public liability (legal liability as the owner of the building for accidents which happen during the period of insurance) but not for someone you employ or a member of your household. You should check the exact wording of your policy for coverage. It covers an accident involving friends, family (who do not live in the house) or anyone who calls to your property who may get injuried.

A prime example is injury as a result of scalding tea falling on a neighbours child in your kitchen.

Anyone you employ is not covered and they should have their own insurance in order for protection

The situation I was wondering about is the fact I was having a workman in to do a paint job and I know his job is not a painter and he would not have any cover himself so thanks again for clarifying.

You need to check with your home insurer. Often they will cover tradesmen that are involved in the maintenance of your house (rather than the rebuilding of same). You would need to run this particular scenario past them.

what exactly are you worried about? Him injurying himself? Or damaging your property?

ok, well then what you are concerned with whether your insurance policy gives you coverage for employers liability. Normally a domestic employee such as a nanny or cleaner would be covered. But you will have to look at the wording of your own particular policy. That said if he injured himself as a result as your negligence as a property owner e.g. tripped over a hole in the carpet then that would be covered.

Having studied a number of policies there is cover in place for domestic employees but there is no cover for tradesmen and others employed by you on your property

Differences between the Irish household policies coverage are minimal. The Main areas of differences are in excess, limits, and specific max amounts

Checked with insurance company and was advised to get workers liability insurance to cover any uninsured person coming in to do a job as they are not covered otherwise.
