What do you think of this quote for bathroom refurb?

got a quote in Donegal to fit bathroom ensuite and downstairs toilet and shower room for 1500 euro ex materials...and its a reputable firm.

Does anyone know exactly what is the average daily rate for a plumber, I also have been getting quotes to update an ensuite but everyone I go to wants to do the whole job. Plumbing, Tiling and supply bathroom suite. As far as I can see it is cheaper for me to supply the suite and tiles and just employ a plumber and tiler seperately. But nobody wants to give me a quote seperately. For instance I got a quote recently to update an ensuite(remove existing toilet, sink and shower, refit, remove old tiles, re plaster board and re-tile---1800euros) is this for real for 4 days work this is six months childrens allowance for me!!

We are updating our en-suite at the moment. Our builder is charging €100 per day for labour. It will take approx. 7 days. This is for:
  • enlarging the shower, by breaking existing wall
  • installing shower tray/shower door
  • installing electric shower
  • removing all tiles
  • adding new tiles
  • installing new sink/toliet
  • installing heated towel rail
We paid €1900 for all the materials. So all in will be approx. €2600 which I think is a reasonable price to pay.

What part of the country are you based in, Maggs?

It does pay to shop around no doubt. This is what i do every day and depending on what needs to be done the job should cost between €1500 and €2500. The usual case i see is on average a 30 yard bathroom, fit new toilet, fit new sink, fit new bath or shower tray, fit new shower, fit new shower door, replace existing pipes and hide them in wall or under floor so as to show the minimum amount of pipe work as possible, take down existing tiles on walls and floor, re slab walls and re ply floor and re tile bathroom

For this it would be €2000 for labour and €500 for supplies, example slabs, pipes ans ply.

This is a lot of work compared to what was quoted to you for such a small amount of work. In my experience anything over the €3000 mark is way way off.

Hope this helps for anyone getting quotes for bathroom renovations.

That's a shocking quote!

There's a place in Drogheda (also services North Dublin and don't know about rest of Dublin but probably) that regularly advertises in the free local newspapers (Fingal Independent etc) a whole new bathroom for E2k. Now, you don't get a huge choice of fittings for that, also I don't think they remove existing tiles & plaster- just tile over, but still that's the cost of fittings and labour.

Get lots of quotes!

i know of a co offerin atotal supply and fit package, everything included for 2500 pm if you still need info

to generalzod sorry if i breached guidelines, not at moment but may be in the near future, it just really annoys me to see people being ripped off, this site is doing something to change that

skingtile, please feel free to continue contributing just avoid giving any quotes or advertising for business on the public forums.

My costings were...
Tiles 600
E. shower 250
Bath Screen 100
Ceiling lights (Safe ones) 275
Fittings -Toilet,Basin,Bath,Mixers (2),Taps,Rad, 2000
Skip 170
Tiling inc Adhesives etc 1500 (this included the tiler cordinating the plumber and electrician - which is a must)
Plumber 1200 inc relaying pipes behind the wall
Plasterer 250

Total 6300 - for main bathroom/ toilet

This was done early 2008 - I thought I did well to keep it down to this amount.
I did get nice fittings though - no cheap stuff - but worth it in the end
and least hassle
It can be done for less or more - but in general you get what you pay for.

Where are you based? I would be interested to know more details. Would this included tiling etc? What DOES it include?

Thanks.

As a general rule you should always get 3 quotes for any job, even if one or more of the people giving you quotes have been personally recommended. And let each one know that you are getting multiple quotes - that way they will know that any outrageous quotes will be shown up as such by the other two quotes.
