I have an open fire.
In the area underneath it, there is a 3cm wide, 2cm deep channel that runs from left to right, for the whole width of the fireplace, for no apparent reason.
It collects ash and the only way really to get it out is to scoop it out with my fingers, so that gets messy.
I am considering filling the hole with cement, so that the whole underneath area is flat and a shovel can be easily pushed underneath to get all the ash, or at least most of it.
Is there a type of cement I should use?
Something heatproof maybe?
Or a certain cement / sand mix ratio that would work better?
I dont want the cement cracking under the heat, or worse, exploding.
Any ideas?
