Wet room upstairs - bad idea?

I am considering revamping the upstairs bathroom, and have always wanted a wet room type arrangement?

Is this a bad idea for an upstairs bathroom?

In the past (approx 4 years ago) I had a shower leak that let a small amount of water down into my living room and hall. Nothing major after it was sealed, and hasn't happened since.

I was told it was caused by the fact that my shower is built against a solid outside wall and a hollow stud wall, and there would have been some movement between these two walls, allowing the tiles to let water through.

The idea of having water running all over the floor fills me with fear. Thoughts?

Don't know about this but there is a product like a ready made shower tray for wet rooms. You install it and it is supposed to have the right gradients built in. Then tile over it. Supposed to take the potential for error from the plumber. Chadwicks would have it.

My plumber who would be fairly competent told me that he has installed quite a few of them with no issues. I am going for two wet rooms upstairs.

You need to get the floor and walls "tanked" - a waterproof membrance that covers the walls and floor (except the drains obviously) rendering it watertight. This has to be done before tiling.

Yes, you will have to tank the walls and floors and ensure that all the joints are sealed before tiling. Larsens do a range of products. Good luck.

Get a reputable company and a complete guarantee (for as many years as possible). I love the idea, but a big risk if it goes wrong. Good luck.

There are quite a number of previous threads on wet rooms and tanking if you run the search option in this forum.
