I'm really hoping someone can help me with the following issues.

For over the past 4 years I have been a Home Carer for my husband on Disability Allowance.
(paid by the Dept of Social & Family Affairs)

I am ceasing my Caring duties as they are no longer required.

My husband is going back to rehabilitive training (link to ) www.rehab.ie although he will always be on Disability Allowance.

I am starting into College this Sept.
I now also work part time (20hrs per wk).

On less money than my Carer's book, but I really want to get back to work & start earning.

We currently claim Rent Allowance & Household Benefits Package.

My course will last for 1yr & there are at least another 3-5 more years to study the other courses which are all for the Beauty Industry. I am almost 24 & my husband almost 25.

I have applied for the BTEA & to the BTWA(don't think I can claim both even tho' I do qualify for both schemes)( waiting on approval for BTWA )
& have applied for a VEC maintenance grant which is calculated on Jan 1st - Dec 31st 2006. I was told by the local employment service (FINGAL AREA) that from last year Mary Hanifin has now allowed people on certain Payments to claim for a further two years if going back to further education Does anyone know if this is in true or have a web link or something???

We have a lot to pay out each week like anyone else & a loan which a family member took out for me.

Now we don't go out to pubs & clubs or anything.
We just get on each day & pay our bills like anyone else.

You may think because we are on welfare that we are not like any other person. Everyone seems to think the welfare pay for everything but they certainly do not!

(As i have read a couple of threads & people seem to hate people who are on welfare)

I can tell you all this. We didn't choose to be on welfare as my husband became very ill. He was in & out of hospitals over a period of 3yrs. He was immobile for a time & I became his carer to help at home.

I would love to be able to save as much as we can & go for the Affordable housing or Shared ownership scheme as soon as possible.
Our income for us both at the moment is €20,061.60 per year.

When I combine the BTEA & his D/A & my part time job we will have €29,889.60 per year

Can anyone help us with this matter?

What will we have to save & what costs will we need? Will they take all income into account? I will be working full time when I finish college so I will have to wait one year.

I know some qualifying conditions from Dublin City Council & Fingal Council. I would like to live in a lovely home with nice neighbours like anyone else. Everyone should have a life to look forward to & I just want things to run in our direction for a change. I'm sure a lot of people are thinking the very same.

thanks to all

I don't think that this is at all a fair reflection of the general tenor of posts on such issues on AAM!

Could you maybe explain what you mean. I have read on some posts One on location location location that tenants renting on SW don't care about the areas they live in etc.
I don't think that was very fair now! Your quote-- I said this in case someone thinks the welfare pay for everything. Most of my friends thought this also until I informed them what I had to pay

1. Have you been approved for BTEA? (You're right, you won't get both BTW and BTE but you will be allowed work while on BTEA)

2. Have you any children? (If so, you should apply for FIS)

3. What do you mean about the "Mary Hanafin" bit? Is it the VEC grant you are talking about? If so, look at your local VEC website for details of the grant system

4. Do you see yourself having to return to the Carer's Allowance in the future?

Yes I have being approved for the BTEA, i just need to send in proof of registration which will be next week.

We have no children

The Mary hanifin bit --- I was told by a woman working for LES FINGAL AREA that Mary Hanifin announced that she is now allowing people on certain welfare payments to keep there payment each week for two years only if they are returning to full time education.
I don't know where to find this out on the net. I would like to see this in black & white for myself

I hope in the future that I will not have to return to caring duties. But at the moment I would say no- i will not have to return to caring duties.

Anything you need to know just ask .... thanks for the help

Mary Hanafin is Minister for Education so she would not be talking about allowing people to keep SW payments. You'd be better checking back with LES to see what they meant.

dont know if they will backdate this but if you weren't receiving it while caring for your husband you may have been entitled to it [broken link removed]

I have just left in my sons grant application for PLC grant as closing date is next friday so be sure to check this out immediately. By the way I have always found the VEC as well as citizens information people very helpful.

Also check out the Millenium Fund at the LES office. This is a small grant towards expenses if you are in full time education and on the Back to Education Allowance.

Thanks to all of you for the feedback..
It's nice to know there's so much people out there willing to help...

PC7 I got the respite grant with my Carer's Allowance.. thanks for the link tho'

Ger - Thanks for the advice, I went to them & they told me about the Maintenance Grant which has being sent in to them before the deadline.

Tangerine -- Thanks, I went to the LES (FINGAL AREA) They told me about the millennium fund, They said there is so many people on the waiting list that I might not get anything this year but maybe next year they could help. All depends on the funding

Thanks to all of you
