weird wet spots on floorboards

We have reappearing wet spots in one of our upstairs bedrooms but the walls and ceilings are dry. I lifted the floorboards and there are no pipes running underneath and the boards are dry from below. The stains appear in the exact same spots and pattern every time and some are quite far into the room. The adjoining room has a small fireplace and the short side is adjoining to the room in question. I was thinking that maybe the water gets in through the fireplace and travels along below the skirting boards and leaks into the room that way? Any suggestions? And who should I call about this?

Thank you for your help

Salt and possibly other chemical substances can absorb moisture from the air. Your floor might be contaminated by such a substance in the affected areas. Try scrubbing the floorboards in the damp areas.
