wedding planner course

hi all.
im trying to do a course to become a wedding planner. I no nothing about it and any advice would be fantastic. not sure if distance learning or going to a college would be better. im living in cork city.

There isn't a BA in wedding planning as far as i'm aware
Honestly, if you are interested I would think the starting point would be a qualification in event management but I wouldn't think this is even necessary depending on your skills. Organisation and contacts are key. After that, it comes down to your ability to get on with the bride.
 
I know when I was planning my wedding, a lot of the girls on weddingsonline.ie wanted to become planners but there were a lot of bogus makey uppy courses out there at the time.

Unless a course in this area was accredited by a university or FETAC any qualification wouldn't be worth the paper it's written on, so as seriams suggests, event management would be a good background as there are decent courses in this.
 
you can do a Diploma to become a wedding planner with event management by distant learning, its to start the 22 Jan, fitzwilliam inistitute in Dublin does this course, your qualifications will be accredited by the ICM and is recognised both national and international
 
taraA thanks a million. thats the only course i was aware of but not sure if its good or not.. im very interested in doing it but oviously want it to be worth it. its my dream job and would love a job in this area.do you no anything about it or do you o of anyone who has done it... thanks again
 
Is there really a career to be made in this? How many clients would you need to get a decent income? How many people are willing to pay for this service? Perhaps you should focus on general event management, rather than on this narrow niche?

Hi there,

Just to let you know I am currently doing this course through fitzwilliams in dublin through distance learning. The course is really good. You need to be very motivated and strict with yourself if doing it at home as it's very easy to say i'll do it tomorrow. This course also covers event management so covers alot. Hope this helps, I'm loving this course so far.

I agree. I would imagine existing wedding planners are struggling to find business in today's climate so I would imagine newly qualified people coming onto the market would find it very difficult to get work.
 
No i hav no connection with the providers of this course but im also really interested in wedding planning, I hav a full time job that has nothing to do wit dis course and i love wat i do but ive decided to give this a go too as its always been in my head, an c how it works out,
 

As someone who works in the event management area, a key part of planning any event is attention to detail. Text speak isn't a great reference.
 
No need to shout, of course you are correct in that that particular phrase should have been in quotation marks...and I did put a smiley at the end of my comment but was flagging a genuine issue. If you saw the number of CVs and emails we get with text speak...they are non-starters.

As I say, I work in the area and detail is everything.
