Water retaining crystals

I had a mixed fern plant in my bathroom but it died. I think it dried out even tho I watered and fed it regularly.Heat from the rad?

I got a new one and want to get water retaining crystals. My question is has anyone used them? Do you push them down through the soil?
 
You probably overwatered/overfed it. A fern living in a bathroom (with presumably little natural light) would not need a lot of either. The generally higher humidity in a bathroom would mean it would need watering only very infrequently. Most houseplants are killed by kindness rather than neglect - too much watering and too much feeding.
 
Thanks Sherman but the soil was all hard and dried out so i think it dried out?

Thanks to the other replies too. I got another and am going to put water retaining crystals in it.

My bathroom does not have a lot of natural light and the rads can make it warm. I don't have a shower and I think there is not as much humidity from the bath?
