Anyone know if there are any grants for having to install a water filter on a private well. Got quote for €2500 to get rid of magnese and carbon and having already forked out the same for drilling the well would like to know if I can get anything back on this from Local Authorities. Thanks

As far as I know you need to be in the house 7 years before you get a grant. As usual v. little for new builds.

Hi Wexford dude,

I'm in mine 15 years - where could I find out about that water grant?

Thanks Wexford dude, I only noticed today that on the co. council website that there are some grants though for drilling a new well - has anyone any experience on claiming for this - I never knew about this when getting mine done and I see that the grant has to be approved prior to work commencing - are the councils strict on this?

The following is from Meath CoCo but the scheme is much the same in every local authority.

Bear in mind a new well system, deep bored well, sub pump, pressure vessel, associated electrics and housing and water treatment will put you back between €7k and €8 the max of the grant is about €2k. Some local authorities will not pay out the grant until the water is adequate in terms of quantity and quality. Some local authorities will not pay the well grant where public or group water is availiable "or likely to be" availiable in the vicinity. As far as I know you can apply for the well grant again 7 years after the first well grant was paid out. Bear in mind also that the well must be for purely domestic purposes only. This rules out farms and other commercial activities! You will not get the grant for work already done before the inspection.

Paddy, Is there really carbon in your water and if so is this a problem? Have you had it tested by an independent laboratory? aj

Thanks aj, guess the grant system for drilling the well is too late for me then...yes got the water tested by HSE so is should be independent. The filter for this is not that expensive - its the magnese which costs the most.
