Seems fair to me. I presume "cash" is no invoice so you are encouraging tax evasion but so do a lot of people, was the work done to your satisfaction?, could you have done it for less?,prices seems about right to me.
Yeah, I did the work a while ago... just the locals hags are now coming out of the wood work saying I got ripped off etc etc. Usual local envy based comments.
The work was very good - I mean I didn't have to get him to repeat anything etc etc...
Thanks, Kerak...
Why would you assume he is encouraging tax evasion. It is up to the contractor to pay his taxes, not the customer

why the negative feeling comment?,
If customers asked for an an invoice and its not forthcoming then they are encouraging, condoning , or assisting in possible tax evasion.
It usually implies VAT is not been charged, and the cash payment is undeclared.
I agree its upto the contractor to pay his own taxes but the client has a part to pay as well.
Why is there even any discussion allowed or going on regarding the tax affairs of a contractor that the OP hired. The thread is about whether or not the OP was overcharged for work done. The contractors tax affairs are not relevant to the thread, to the question asked, or to anyone else but the contractor and the revenue.
